With all the struggling that consumers are going through these days, it is surprising that more people haven’t filed for Bankruptcy. Times are really hard. People are losing their jobs, and in turn, are losing their homes. They are moving from four and five bedroom homes down to two bedroom apartments. They are selling their belongings because they need the money and, they can’t put five bedrooms into two. It just seems to be a nightmare that most cannot wake up from. There are some options available to consumers that have no where else to turn, but before going forward, you may want to know how bankruptcy affects the rest of your life.

Filing for bankruptcy protection is something many people are doing these days. Not because they want to, but because they simply see no way out. The economy has taken its toll on everyone and so many people have lost their jobs and their homes. If they can’t pay their bills, no matter how many threats they receive, they still can’t pay their bills.

There are a few bankruptcies that one could file under and all of them protect the consumer to a certain point. It will allow the consumer to keep certain things such as their home or their car, if they continue to pay on it.

Bankruptcy will follow the consumer for ten years and their credit will reflect that. It can prevent a consumer for getting a personal loan, auto loan or credit cards. This is a huge black mark to merchants and it is all over the consumers credit report. Expect it to be difficult for the first few years, but if you planned right, and are using cash, the credit part of it won’t be so bothersome.

Having this can also prevent the consumer from acquiring good housing. When a tenant applies for an apartment or a house, the manager will do a credit check on them. If it shows a bankruptcy, they could be turned down for the housing. Sometimes, an owner will ask for an explanation and may take that into consideration when evaluating the tenant’s package, but they don’t have to. Often, this is just a rule that if there is a bankruptcy, the tenant will get turned down.

Some people have been turned down for employment simply because their credit check shows a bankruptcy. Some employers will do a credit check on potential employees. It is not uncommon to lose a job opportunity because of this.

If a person is looking to buy a home, a bankruptcy may prevent that from happening. It can be difficult, watching these opportunities go by because you had to file, but remember this. Although the bankruptcy will be on your credit for the next ten years, most merchants start welcoming you back within two or three years.

Bankruptcy is a drastic way to go, but sometimes, it is the only way. It is hard to admit when it is time to throw the hands up in the air and contact an attorney. No one likes doing this and claiming bankruptcy is humiliating and embarrassing for most people. But remember that this was not planned, and the economy has hurt many others as it has you. Although it is a drastic step, recovery will happen within the next two or three years. Before you actually file, contact an attorney and understand how bankruptcy affects the rest of your life.
